Welcome back to the 12 Days of Christmas 2023 – Trash to Treasure! It’s Day 6, and I’ve got a delightful project that turns thrifted finds into a whimsical holiday decoration. Today’s focus is on repurposing a $3 thrifted chalkboard, a 50-cent elf, and adding a touch of modern flair with a Cricut vinyl cutting machine.

Scroll past the instructions for three FREE options for the vinyl sign.
Materials Used:
- Thrifted chalkboard – $3
- Thrifted elf figurine – $0.50
- Cricut vinyl cutting machine
- Cricut premium vinyl in white
- Transfer tape
- Weeding tools
- Scissors
- Optional: Additional embellishments like holiday ribbon or tiny ornaments (I did not use any)
Step-by-Step Guide:
1. Clean and Prepare
Ensure that the thrifted chalkboard is clean, a quick wipe with a damp cloth should do the trick.
2. Design the Vinyl Sign
Using my Cricut design space I created “This apartment is under elf surveillance”. I am including that svg along with two other pdfs one that says “This house is under elf surveillance” and “This condo is under elf surveillance”.
3. Cut the Vinyl
Load your chosen vinyl sheet into the Cricut machine and cut the design. Don’t forget to adjust settings based on the vinyl type you’re using.
4. Weed the Design
Carefully remove the excess vinyl around your design using weeding tools. This step requires precision, especially if your design includes intricate details like the camera silhouette.
5. Apply Transfer Tape
Place transfer tape over your weeded design, ensuring it adheres well. This will make it easier to transfer the vinyl onto the chalkboard.
6. Transfer the Design
Gently lift the design with the transfer tape and place it onto the chalkboard. Smooth out any air bubbles using a scraper tool or the edge of a credit card.
7. Decorate the Elf – Optional
Give your thrifted elf a makeover by adding vinyl accents. Consider a vinyl bowtie, hat, or even a small sign with a clever saying.
8. Assemble the Display
Position the elf on the chalkboard creatively. You can have it perched on the edge or leaning against the board to enhance the surveillance theme.
9. Optional Embellishments
Feel free to add extra flair with holiday ribbon, miniature ornaments, or any other festive touches that suit your style.
Conclusion
Voila! In just a few simple steps, you’ve turned thrifted items into a charming holiday decoration. Don’t forget to share your creations on social media using the hashtag #12DaysChristmasDIY. Stay tuned for more festive crafts in the coming days.
