How to Make a DIY Pumpkin Spice Candle Using Thrifted Mugs
🎃 Turn cozy vibes into flickering light with this easy fall project
Fall is the ultimate DIY season — the air is crisp, the sweaters are chunky, and every corner of your home just begs to be wrapped in something warm, soft, and scented like your favorite latte. If you love the smell of pumpkin spice and the thrill of a good thrifted find, this DIY candle project is about to become your new favorite seasonal ritual.
✨ Why Thrifted Mugs?
Thrifted mugs are the unsung heroes of cozy DIY. They’re budget-friendly, come in charming patterns, and offer a unique way to give old items new life. Whether you score a vintage stoneware mug with autumn leaves or a classic oversized ceramic diner-style cup, each one makes the perfect container for a warm and fragrant homemade candle.
🕯️ What You’ll Need:
-
1 thrifted mug (ceramic, clean, no cracks)
-
Soy wax flakes (available at craft stores or Amazon)
-
Candle wick (medium size, cotton or wooden)
-
Wick sticker or hot glue
-
Pumpkin spice fragrance oil (or blend: cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, vanilla)
-
Wick holder or chopsticks
-
Microwave-safe container or double boiler
-
Thermometer (optional but handy)
🍂 Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Prep the Mug
Wash and dry your thrifted mug thoroughly. Stick the wick to the bottom center using a wick sticker or a dab of hot glue.
2. Melt the Wax
Measure enough soy wax to fill the mug and melt it in a microwave-safe container or double boiler. Stir gently until fully liquified.
3. Add Fragrance
Once melted, remove from heat and let cool slightly (around 130–140°F). Then, add 10–12% pumpkin spice fragrance oil (or essential oil blend) and stir well.
4. Pour & Set
Pour the scented wax into your mug. Use a wick holder or chopsticks to keep the wick upright and centered. Let it set for several hours or overnight.
5. Trim & Enjoy
Trim the wick to ¼ inch, and your cozy candle is ready to light! Instant PSL (Pumpkin Spice Latte) ambiance.
🧵 Optional Add-On: Make It Giftable
Attach a cute thrifted spoon with twine or tuck in a printed label/tag with your candle’s name (“Spice Things Up,”). These make perfect hostess gifts or early holiday presents.
