Day 9 – 12 Day of Christmas 2023 – Trash to Treasure

On the ninth day of “Trash to Treasure 12 Days of Christmas,” I’m diving into the world of boho chic with a stunning macramé wall hanging. This festive creation repurposes a 14-inch thrifted wooden hoop (a steal at $1.00!), bottle green 4mm macramé cord, and thrifted fake flowers to bring holiday cheer to any space.

Materials Needed:

  • 14-inch thrifted wooden hoop ($1.00)
  • Bottle green 4mm macramé cord
  • Thrifted fake flowers
  • Scissors
  • Patience and creativity!

Instructions:

Step 1: Prepare Your Hoop

Start by cleaning and preparing your thrifted wooden hoop. Sand away any rough edges and give it a fresh coat of paint or stain if desired. This sets the stage for a polished finished product.

Step 2: Cut Your Macramé Cord

Measure and cut the bottle green 4mm macramé cord into equal-length pieces, depending on the desired length of your wall hanging. Aim for at least 5 feet per piece to account for knots and fringe. I used 16 pieces cut at 10 feet each.

Step 3: Begin the Square Knots

Fold one piece of cord in half and place it under the hoop. Pull the loop over the hoop and through the opening, creating a simple lark’s head knot. Repeat this process with the 16 pieces of cording- gather at the bottom of the hoop.

Step 4: Create Rows with Square Knots

Start creating rows of square knots by taking two adjacent cords and tying a square knot about 3 inches down from the hoop. Repeat this process, alternating pairs of cords to create a beautiful pattern. I only did two rows of square knots.

Step 5: Add Flowers

Incorporate your thrifted fake flowers by attaching them to the macramé hook with hot glue – I did mine off to one side. This adds a festive touch to your boho Christmas wall hanging.

Step 6: Create Fringe

Finish off your masterpiece by trimming the ends of the cords to create a fringe. You can leave them uniform or experiment with different lengths for a more dynamic look (as I did).

Voila!

Admire your boho Christmas macramé wall hanging, a beautiful transformation of thrifted items into a unique holiday decor piece. Hang it proudly in your home and revel in the joy of turning forgotten treasures into something magical.

Have you ever made anything from macrame? Let me know in the comments.
