Day 8 – 12 Days of Christmas 2023 – Trash to Treasure
Welcome back to 12 Days of Christmas Trash to Treasure series! On Day 8, I’m diving into the world of thrifted treasures, transforming ordinary items into festive delights. Today’s spotlight is on thrifted salt and pepper shakers, each given a holiday makeover that brings joy and whimsy to your decor.
Materials Needed:
- Thrifted salt and pepper shakers
- Bottle brush trees
- Epsom Salt (or fake snow)
- Small styrofoam ball
- Gel beads (from Dollarama or similar)
- Ribbons
- Miniature bells
- Glue gun
- Scissors
Snowman Shaker
Using hot glue add a bottle brush tree to the bottom of the salt shaker, add about a tablespoon of fake snow (I used epsom salt), glue a styrofoam ball on top of shaker for his head. Glue the lid as a hat. Draw eyes and mouth on snowman face with black marker, draw or use small piece of fabric for snowman nose. Wrap a thrifted plaid fabric(or ribbon or your choice) around the neck for the scarf. Glue in place. Optional – ribbon to hang on tree.
Gel Bead Shaker
Fill another shaker with gel beads for a unique sensory element. I bought my beads at Dollarama – Embellish with a festive ribbon (I used a small piece of the thrifted pyjamas that I deconstructed and ripped into useable pieces), securing it around the neck of the shaker with a dab of hot glue, add embellishments if so desired – I used a small bell. I also used a thrifted checker that fit under the lid – this way they can be made in advance and not lose the scent until you are ready to use them.
Mini Snowglobe
Transform the third shaker into a mini snowglobe. Add a bottle brush tree with hot glue, add the fake snow (epsom salt) and the miniature bells. Screw the top back on, ensuring it’s secure. Wrap a ribbon around the exterior for an extra touch of charm. Attach a thread for hanging )optional.
Display
Arrange your newly crafted shakers on a tabletop, mantel, or shelf. Let their festive charm bring a smile to all who see them.
Day 8 proves that treasures can be found in unexpected places. Thrifted salt and pepper shakers, once overlooked, now shine as festive holiday decor. Get creative with your thrifted finds. Stay tuned for more inspiring crafts in the days ahead!
