I Didn’t Love It, I Still Did It: Proof You Don’t Have to Love Something to Stick With It
Every once in a while, I pick something small-but-mighty to challenge myself. Nothing flashy. Nothing that requires special equipment, matching workout sets, or a dramatic “before” photo. Just a quiet agreement with myself that says: let’s try this and see what happens.
December’s challenge was squats.
The deal was simple.
One squat on December 1.
Two on December 2.
Three on December 3.
And so on, all the way to December 31… when I wrapped up the month with 31 squats.
On paper, it doesn’t sound like much. Especially if you’re someone who enjoys the gym, lifts heavy things for fun, or casually drops phrases like “leg day.” For those people, this probably reads like a warm-up.
But here’s the thing: when you add it all up, that little daily habit turns into 496 squats in one month. Four hundred and ninety-six times of lowering myself down and convincing my legs to bring me back up again. That’s not nothing.
What surprised me most wasn’t the physical part. Yes, my legs noticed. Yes, there were days I muttered “why did I choose squats?” under my breath. But the real win was the consistency. Showing up every single day. No skipping because it was busy. No skipping because it was cold. No skipping because I didn’t feel like it.
And here’s my full honesty moment:
I have never enjoyed squats.
And guess what?
I still don’t.

But I did enjoy how it felt to keep a promise to myself. I enjoyed realizing that I don’t have to love something to do it. I enjoyed the quiet confidence that comes from finishing what you start, even when it’s uncomfortable, boring, or slightly annoying.
So… I’m doing it again.
This time, I’m not doing it alone. Two friends are joining me, which adds a whole new layer of accountability and encouragement (and maybe a bit of friendly complaining). Same rules. Same slow build. Same commitment to just showing up.
Not every challenge has to be extreme. Sometimes it’s the small, steady ones that teach us the most. About discipline. About patience. About ourselves.
Proof you don’t have to love something to stick with it… you just have to decide not to quit.
If you’ve been thinking about trying a small challenge of your own, consider this your gentle nudge. Pick something simple, start where you are, and see what happens when you just keep showing up.
Warmly yours,
Wanda, xo
